Residency Training Phase

The residency training period is three years for Family Medicine, Pediatrics and general Internal  Medicine. Obstetrics and Gynecology and Medicine-Pediatrics training is four years. The MRPSP Scholar must enter a clinic based practice in an approved rural or medically under served Mississippi community of 20,000 or fewer residents within ninety (90) days of the completion of residency training in one of these five specialties. An increased sensitivity to the importance of completing residency training within the state is supported by current research indicating a majority of physicians establish their practice within 100 miles of where they trained. We are "growing our own" primary care physicians.

MRPSP Honor Lapel Pin

Mississippi House Appropriations Chairman Johnny Stringer initiated a new tradition to recognize MRPSP medical school graduates as they begin their primary care residencies. Gold lapel pins with a black band reading "Mississippi Rural Physician" encircle the emblematic black doctor's bag enscribed "Scholar" for the first two graduates to wear on their new long white coats. Dr. Brent Smith of Cleveland will train in Family Medicine at UMMC. Also receiving the MRPSP Honor pin was Dr. Amanda Smith who will also enter the UMMC Family Medicine Residency program.
