Family Medicine

The patient-physician relationship in the context of the family distinguishes family medicine from other specialties. The family physician's care is both personal and comprehensive, caring for all ages, organ systems, both sexes and type of problem, be it biological, behavioral or social. This care is based on knowledge of the patient in the context of the family and the community, emphasizing disease prevention and health promotion. When referral is indicated, the family physician remains the coordinator of the patient's health care in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Nursing Homes

Second and third year residents provide continuity of care to patients at a nursing home in the Jackson area. Residents make monthly teaching and patient care rounds with program faculty. Monthly educational presentations are done on topics pertinent to care of the older adult.

Conferences

Core curriculum conferences are presented every Friday afternoon. These include a variety of lecture, discussion, and workshop formats. Residents are involved in presenting journal club, case presentations and senior conferences.

Procedure Training

Procedure workshops are held throughout the residency. These include workshops on flexible sigmoidoscopy, colposcopy, fine needle aspiration of masses, joint injections and splinting and casting. Experience in colonoscopy, esophagogastroduodenoscopy, exercise treadmill testing, and operative obstetrics is offered electively.

Special Program Components

The Mississippi Schools for the Blind and Deaf, and Millsaps College, Student Health Centers. Our program serves as primary physicians for students at both the MS School for the Blind and Deaf and Millsaps College, both located close to the University Campus. Residents attend to students' needs at on-site medical clinics on a rotational basis. Students from any school requiring more extensive care are seen in our residency clinics.

UMMC Family Medicine Residency Director

Dr. Shannon Pittman

UMMC Family Medicine

Remaining close to family and her home town of Summit, MS is important to Dr. Shannon Pittman. With an undergraduate biology degree in hand from Tougaloo College in Jackson, she entered UMMC's School of Medicine, completed her residency in Family Medicine and now is part of the academic faculty, serving as Residency Director of the program.

"After four years at UMMC, I knew that I could not possibly find a field that spoke to who I am and my passion for people more than Family Medicine does."

North Mississippi Medical Center Residency Director

Dr. Michael O'Dell

North Mississippi Medical Center

A retired Navy Captain and Kansas native, Dr. Michael O’Dell’s Mississippi roots are firmly planted in the red clay surrounding the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, the largest rural hospital in America. Author, mentor and advocate for the indigent and under served, he is the Family Medicine Residency Director and Quality Control Officer of NMMC.

"My practice allows me the gift of understanding the lives of many persons from many walks of life. It is a joy to serve and be of help to so many and to enjoy the trust and relationships that result from this caring."

Two Outstanding Young Family Medicine Physicians

Dr. Luke Lampton
Dr. Lucius Lampton
Magnolia, MS

Historian, author, Phi Beta Kappa scholar, newspaper publisher and current Chairman of the State Board of Health, Dr. Lucius "Luke" Lampton is truly a Mississippi bred "Renaissance Man," accomplished in both the arts and sciences.

"Since Hippocrates, physicians have been striving to make a difference in the lives of their patients. In rural Mississippi, primary care physicians still carry on this ancient medical legacy. You are not taking care of patients as much as you are taking care of friends. There is no better job on earth. I thank God every day that I am a rural family physician!"

Dr. Katrina Poe-Johnson
Kilmichael, MS

Named 2005 "Country Doctor of the Year", Dr. Katrina Poe-Johnson of Kilmichael, MS, population 834, is the second female, first African-American and youngest recipient of this prestigious national award. Scholarships facilitated her education at MSU and UMMC where she chose to complete her Family Medicine Residency Program in 2001, serving as assistant chief resident for two years. That same year she became chief of staff of Kilmichael Hospital, the smallest hospital in the state yet the cornerstone of the community's economic structure. Dr. Poe-Johnson calls her work "a blessing." That's a big deal for a small country town with just one doctor, keeping medical care close to home.

Internal Medicine

Internal medicine is the branch and specialty of medicine concerning the diagnosis and non surgical treatment of diseases in adults, especially of internal organs. Doctors of Internal Medicine, also called "internists", are often referred to as the "doctor's doctor" because they are often called upon to act as consultants to other physicians to help solve puzzling diagnostic problems. Doctors of Internal Medicine treat the whole person, not just internal organs.

Medical Rotation Schedule

One of the personal touches that the UMC program offers is the way our residents are scheduled. Done with each individual resident’s interests in mind, our chief residents still make out the master schedule by hand every year. While our program has looked at a number of automated databases, we feel that the best fit for the program we want to foster is a hand-made schedule. Our chiefs take into account what each individual resident wishes to pursue long-term, and while they can’t guarantee a specific rotation at a specific time, they do their best to ensure a tailored schedule that fits the personality and desires of each resident.

Outstanding Young Internal Medicine Physician

Dr. Dwight McComb

Amory, MS

After serving as Chief Resident in Internal Medicine at UMMC, Dr. Dwight McComb is now Chief of Staff at a small community hospital in Amory, MS located in the county where he grew up. A certified specialist in clinical hypertension, he’s also the medical director of the wound care center and a hospice agency.

“I went into medicine because I loved the science and the problem-solving, but mostly because I saw a way to give back to my community. Small town Mississippians deserve quality healthcare and I’m doing my best to deliver it. I came home.”

Medicine-Pediatrics

Med-Peds is a four-year residency training program offered by the departments of Medicine and Pediatrics that leads to board eligibility in both specialties. The program trains residents for careers in primary care and enables a resident to become well versed in the healthcare issues of patients from newborn to adolescence to adulthood. Med-Peds cover 24 months of medicine services and 24 months of pediatric services during the four year residency, rotating between departments every three months.

UMMC Med-Peds Residency Director

Dr. Jimmy Stewart

UMMC Medicine-Pediatrics

Meet a man who has found his calling: Dr. Jimmy Stewart. For the past seven years, he's directed the Combined Medicine and Pediatrics Residency Program. Interest in Med-Peds surfaced during his fourth year of medical school.

"The program combined my love of taking care of children and my interest in the intellectual aspects of treating complex medical patients."

Dr. Stewart was voted Clinical Sciences Professor of the Year and named a Clinical Sciences Faculty All-Star for three consecutive years. His residents and students agree that his attention to details and genuine interest in their needs set the tone for the program.

Outstanding Young Med-Peds Physician

Belzoni, MS (population 2,541) is home to Dr. Carlton Gorton where he practices medicine with his dad. Educated at Ole Miss and UMMC, Dr. Gorton chose Med-Peds for his residency training as it prepared him to treat the sickest patients, newborns to grandparents.

"My practice is evenly split between adults and pediatrics. I absolutely love what I do and thank God for the privilege of being a physician. If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't change a thing."

Dr. Carlton Gorton and Family

UMMC Obstetrics/Gynecology Residency Director

Dr. Sheila Bouldin

Dr. Sheila Bouldin

UMMC OB/GYN

After four years as a registered pharmacist, Dr. Sheila Bouldin entered medical school in Florida and completed her residency there. A Jackson, MS native, Dr. Bouldin returned to her home state and entered private practice in Biloxi. Family ties brought her back to the Capitol city, joining the OB/GYN faculty at UMMC in 2002 where she serves as Residency Director.

"I chose Obstetrics and Gynecology because I enjoy taking care of women throughout all phases of life. Women for the most part take active roles in their healthcare and go for preventive checkups. I also enjoy witnessing and participating in the joy of bringing a new life into the world. This alone makes sleepless nights and long hours bearable."

Pediatrics

Pediatrics is the medical specialty dealing with the development, health, and diseases of children which differs from adult medicine in many respects. Congenital defects, genetic variance, immunology, oncology, and a host of other issues are unique to the realm of pediatrics. Dedicated to the attainment of the best physical, emotional, and social health for infants, children, and young people, pediatricians also act as advocates for children in endorsing public education, access to health care, and services to children. Much time is devoted to regular health examinations, as well as to preventive medicine through immunizations against such infectious diseases as influenza, meningitis, measles, mumps, and chicken pox.

UMMC Pediatrics Residency Director

Dr. Jeffrey Crout

UMMC Pediatrics

Jackson native Dr. Jeffrey Crout has recently been named Residency Director of Pediatrics. With degrees in Chemistry and History from Millsaps, he completed his medical training and served as Chief Resident of Pediatrics at UMMC. After several years in private practice in Clinton, he returned to UMMC where he’s won teaching and clinical awards every year including UMMC Clinical Professor of the Year in 2007.

"I chose Pediatrics as my career because, simply stated, nothing I have found in the field of medicine is better than trying to make a sick child feel better. Children have an inherent nobility regardless of their age, socioeconomic status, or state of health. Children are resilient and hardy people who make coming to work on busy days worthwhile."

Two Outstanding Young Pediatricians

Dr. Melody Byram

Union, MS

Initially trained as a Nurse Practitioner, Dr. Melody Byram attended UMMC as a National health Service Corp Scholar and spent nine weeks in Nigeria as a third year medical student. Her missionary zeal carried over to her first position as the sole pediatrician in the three county area surrounding the Sebastopol Community Health Center. Now in private practice in Union (population 2,000), she muses “Life can be good out here. It’s real old-fashioned medicine.”

Dr. Michael Artigues

McComb, MS

While earning a degree in Biomedical Engineering, Dr. Michael Artigues thought he’d be an orthopedist. During his third year at UMMC he found many aspects of pediatrics (the approachable staff, endearing patients and diagnostic challenges) very attractive and something he’d enjoy the rest of his career.

"Being in rural Mississippi allows me to serve a broader spectrum of patients, particularly economically depressed populations for whom quality medical care is not taken for granted. Nearly 13 years, six children and hundreds of baseball/softball/soccer games later I can honestly say we made the right choice."
